The Bristol Hearing Voices Network is a self-help group for people who hear voices, have intrusive thoughts or undergo other unusual experiences. From a psychiatric perspective, these widely experienced phenomena are often understood as symptoms of psychotic illness, however, the group is open to many diverse ideas, and accepts each individual voice hearer’s own interpretations.
The standard treatment for voice hearing remains heavy tranquillisers, administered to reduce the intensity of the experience. However, not everyone responds well to this treatment. In the field of progressive mental healthcare, there is an increasing movement towards the acceptance and exploration of voice hearing experiences.
The Bristol Hearing Voices Network offers a unique setting where these ideas can be opened up. The group meets weekly at Windmill City Farm to provide mutual support through open conversation about voice hearing experiences. Anyone seeking to understand,learn from, cope with or grow through these experiences is welcome. No referral is necessary - just turn up. This is not a therapy group, so attendees have the right to remain silent.
