Match the measure to your question
A first outpatient appointment, a diagnostic test and the start of treatment are different milestones. A specialty-wide measure can include many treatments; a trust may run several hospitals. Keep those distinctions when comparing options.
Published waiting times describe a group and reporting period. Your clinical needs and the treatment you require can mean your own wait differs.
Check the source and reporting period
Compare the same measure for the same period wherever possible. A recent update date does not necessarily mean the underlying care activity happened that week. My Planned Care and NHS statistical publications use different methods and reporting schedules.
Discuss alternatives with your referring team
Ask which service and clinical team would receive your referral, whether the available figures cover that service, and what other suitable providers you can choose. The NHS waiting-times guide explains applicable rights and exceptions.
- Does this figure cover the exact specialty I need?
- Is it a wait for an appointment or the start of treatment?
- Would a different location mean additional journeys for tests and follow-up?
- Who should I contact if my circumstances change while waiting?
