Start with registration and access
Check the surgery’s current registration arrangements, including whether your address is within its usual area. If you are considering an out-of-area registration, ask how home visits, urgent care and community services would work.
The NHS provides online and paper routes to registration. Its registration guidance explains the information normally needed and what to do if you have difficulty registering.

Read several types of evidence together
An inspection, a patient survey and recorded appointment activity answer different questions. Check the dates and the organisation each result describes. A favourable result in one measure does not establish that every aspect of the service suits your needs.
For a practice with several branches, practice-level statistics may cover all branches together. Do not treat them as a separate assessment of the building closest to you.
Keep a short list of practical questions
Save the practices you want to compare, then use their official websites or the NHS registration service to confirm your next step. Registration status can change after a directory update.
